Get to know a little about our Director Huw:

Q: What made you choose Physiotherapy as a career?

A: From a young age my grandmother had a stroke, and later a broken hip, and seeing her recovery in the hospital and at home with the therapy teams to walk again and adapt her function was incredible. This alongside my multiple injuries through my own sporting background inspired me to help others on their recovery journey regardless of the goal needed through a career in physiotherapy.

Q: University year qualified and work experience?

A: Qualified as a physiotherapist in 2009 from Coventry University. Since then, I have achieved a masters degree in Manual Therapy alongside a qualification as an Injection Therapist and Independent Prescriber.

Clinically I Spent 10 years in varying roles in the Acute NHS hospitals getting a good grounding in all areas of Physiotherapy before specialising in Musculoskeletal injuries – spending 7 of these years as a Team Lead Physiotherapist. Subsequently, for over 5 years, I now work as an Advanced First Contact Physiotherapist in GP practices helping diagnose patients and provide early guidance on rehabilitation whilst also being able to offer investigations, Injections and prescriptions alongside physiotherapy input.

I have worked in the private sector alongside NHS work since 2010 eventually opening my own practice in 2016, gaining vast experience with clients from all walks of life, including elite athletes, to help with their recovery.

Q: Why did you start OXON Physiotherapy?

A: I always wanted to start my own practice and be able to provide treatment in a timely manner to patients with no restrictions on number of treatments or what treatment methods to be able to use. Since 2016 the clinic has grown from our purpose made garage conversion to being in Bannatynes gym and has rapidly grown since then. Being able to provide the best treatment with fantastic facilities whilst also being able to offer treatment options not normally available in physio clinics such as injections and gait analysis to provide world leading insoles has exceeded my expectations of the clinic but has allowed us to support our clients even more in their recovery whatever their goal.

Q: What do you love most about your job?

A: Being a detective and trying to decipher the symptoms to identify the problem and collaboratively work on a plan to get the client to achieve their goals. Seeing the smile when we reach that goal is priceless

Q: What’s your greatest achievement in your career?

A: Becoming a physiotherapist in the first place!

This has subsequently allowed me to complete my Masters and Independent prescribing and be able to offer wonderful things such as injection and pain relief in the clinic without the need to see the GP.

Q: Clinical special interests?

A:          Supporting runners to keep running

Shoulders

Biomechanical Analysis – being able to review the body to support and improve function

Ability to utilise steroid injections for pain relief to help enhance the recovery journey

Q: What’s your favourite patient journey and why?

A: Taking on a patient who previously had a bad physiotherapy experience following a ruptured achilles and getting them back running and playing netball confidently.

Q: Top Pastimes?

A: Getting married and my wonderful children.

Honeymooning in New Zealand and Fiji.

Representing my Country in Athletics on multiple occasions.

Q: Who would you like to get stuck in a lift with?

A: My friends, if we’re going to be stuck for a while then we may as well have fun!

Q: Scariest thing you’ve done?

A:  Jump out of a plane – it was great fun in hindsight when my feet were firmly back on the ground though!

Q: Favourite Film?

A: I can’t pick one therefore I’ll pick the whole Marvel Franchise

Q: One item to take to a desert island?

A: A ball, not fussed on size or shape but it will give me something to do.

Q: Favourite food?

A: Mexican, although I do very much enjoy a Sunday Roast.

Q: What do you do at the weekends?

A: You’ll mostly find me pitchside supporting the kids in football, cricket or coaching them in rugby. Come summer you may find me in the caravan with the family, likely near water for us to go paddleboarding.

On the rare chance I have time a round of golf doesn’t go a miss!

Q: What to expect from me?

An honest whole person approach that will explain the issues and plan your recovery journey alongside you to get to your specific goal.
